Jeannie Petyarre
Jeannie is a talented Papunya Tula artist who captures the spirit and soul
of her rich culture. Her work is held in national collections across
Australia and is popular with galleries in Australia and internationally.
Born c.1957, Jeannie comes from a long line of artists including her aunt,
the acclaimed Gloria Petyarre, and her sister, Rosemary Petyarre. Jeannie's
dreamtime stories come from Alhalkere Country and have been passed down from
her father's family. Her paintings often represent the 'Pencil Yam Dreaming'
and she portrays the yam root, the yam seed (Kame), the yam flower and the
pencil yam itself (Atnwelarr). Jeannie also paints 'Awelye' which are
women's ceremonial bodypainting designs.
