Makinti Napanangka

Makinti is the most senior woman painting with the renowned Papunya Tula art community. Born c.1930 in the Lake MacDonald region of Central Australia, she began painting in acrylic in 1994 for the Kintore/Haasts Bluff collaborative canvas project and in 1996 began painting for Papunya.

Makinti's paintings often consist of interwoven, lightly-coloured lines which represent the hairstring skirts of the 'Kungka Kutjarra' (two women) who feature prominently in Pintupi ancestral stories. Hairstring skirts are worn by Pintupi women in their sacred ceremonies.

In 2000, Makinti's work was exhibited in the retrospective 'Papunya Tula: Genesis and Genius' at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. Since then she has had four solo exhibitions and in 2003 was a finalist in the prestigious Clemenger Art Award, held at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. Makinti has been named four times among the Top 50 of Australia's Most Collectable Artists in the Australian Art Collector - the only artist ever to feature so many times.
